Naturopathic practitioners use a variety of natural and non-invasive therapies, including clinical nutrition, homeopathy, botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, physical medicine, and counseling.

Treating the Whole: Body, Mind and Spirit
Integrative health care is based on a deep understanding of the person as a unique whole, recognizing that the body has its own mechanisms for healing. In order to provide a thorough diagnosis and a prescription for health, I employ the modalities of Naturopathy, Acupuncture and Chinese medicine, Homeopathy, Clinical Nutrition and Functional Medicine™
Naturopathy
Naturopathy emphasizes prevention and utilizes natural therapeutics. Naturopaths are also able to function within an integrated framework. Naturopathic therapies are used to complement treatments of conventionally trained medical doctors. The result is a patient-centered approach that strives to provide the most appropriate treatment for an individual’s needs.
Naturopaths are trained at an accredited, four-year, post-graduate educational institution. This training provides knowledge of the conventional medical sciences, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, immunology, clinical and physical diagnosis, laboratory diagnosis, cardiology, gastroenterology, and gynecology. In addition to this curriculum, the naturopath is required to complete training in clinical nutrition, botanics & herbology and lifestyle change counseling.
Naturopathy views masking or suppressing of symptoms as harmful to your body. With that philosophy as a foundation, naturopaths seek to identify and treat underlying causes of illness.
Naturopaths are guided by six principles:
- First, Do No Harm
- The Healing Power of Nature
- Find the Cause
- Treat the Whole Person
- Preventive Medicine
- Doctor as Teacher
In a healthy state the body is like a free-flowing river.
Acupuncture
Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (Energy) through distinct meridians or pathways. According to ancient theory, acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from where it is in excess. In this way, acupuncture regulates and restores the harmonious energetic balance of the body.
In a healthy state the body is like a free-flowing river. After a storm (i.e. stress), debris might appear in the river and interrupts the smooth flow of the water. If the stress continues, the debris can stagnate in the river and form mud. In the philosophy of Oriental medicine, this stagnation can result in disease. People come into my practice at any level of this continuum. Treatment with acupuncture removes the debris, and allows your body’s energy to flow freely once again.
I work successfully with people who have not enjoyed acupuncture or are needle-phobic. I use only high quality sterile, single use, disposable needles.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a highly systematic, scientific method of therapy. It is based on the principle of stimulating one’s own healing processes in order to relieve the symptoms and enhance health. Each of us is a total, complete individual, no aspect of which can be separated from any other. Any valid therapy must be based on a deep understanding of the person as a unique whole.
Symptoms are considered a sign of the body’s "vital force" working to heal; and the task of the Homeopath is to match the total picture of symptoms with the remedy that will most effectively resonate with the vital force of the patient. The basic system that was devised and verified by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, nearly 200 years ago and has had an astounding success rate with both chronic and acute diseases.
Functional Medicine™
Functional Medicine™ employs cutting-edge laboratory testing to determine the body’s imbalances including digestive, hormonal, neurotransmitter, immune, inflammatory and, endocrine. The patient’s story is a key tool for integrating the diagnosis into a comprehensive program to improve the client’s health. Science-based, Functional Medicine™ identifies the source of subtle symptoms and body imbalances. The test results yield clear information about the imbalance and this allows for a specific protocol of clinical nutrition and supplements to treat the health issue. The patient’s story is a key tool for integrating the diagnosis into a comprehensive program to improve the client’s health.
Clinical Nutrition
Clinical Nutrition utilizes the science of food and the study of how nutrients and pharmaceutical quality supplements are utilized by the body.
Clinical Nutrition utilizes the science of food, the study of how nutrients are digested and metabolized and the effect of high-grade nutritional supplements on the body. Nutrition is similar to the foundation of a house. If the foundation of a house is not sturdy, the house will weaken and eventually collapse. Our society’s nutrition has been adversely affected by busy lifestyles, industrial farming methods, and fast food. We are fortunate to have access to organic and healthier foods to rebuild our foundations. It is possible to learn to make better choices for yourself and your family. With dietary direction and/or pharmaceutical-grade supplements, your body can recover and become healthy.
Carol Lourie has expertise in developing customized nutrition regimes for a range of requirements. A private counseling session will provide the dietary direction to suit an individual's needs and lifestyle. Some examples are:
- Infant & Children's Nutrition: food introduction; allergies; digestive problems; skin conditions related to nutritional status; and eating disorders.
- Sports Nutrition: an individualized protocol utilizing sport physiology is designed to naturally assist the athlete's body to achieve maximum potential. Harmful side effects are avoided.
